Everything you need to know about COMM Advising
October 24, 2024
Don't forget: Advising is mandatory!
Get to know all things advising! Check out the COMM Department Advising Page here.
Let's meet the COMM Advisors, Merceadez and Martiza!
Meet Merceadez Marion!
- Favorite Movie or Show: I'm a K-drama lover. My favorite would have to be Goblin and Sweet Home right now.
- Favorite Quote: "I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear." -Rosa Parks
- Preferred Communication Method: Via phone calls with loved ones but text messages are always a go-to
- Let's Talk About… the COMM ELMS space that was created for all of our students! We wanted to make sure it's updated to give you all the most current information. Check it out!
- Best Piece of Advice for COMM students: Try to get involved and/or pursue any internship you see that's available. A University degree is not enough and although we may think this is common knowledge, when these four years are completed, you will end up looking back and wishing you did more.
Meet Maritza Velasquez-Paolucci!
- Favorite Movie: The movie Encanto. The representation of my Colombian culture, including traditions, music, food, and clothing, is magical and fills me with pride as a Latina.
- Favorite Lyric/Quote: "I like my beats funky, I'm spunky, I like my oatmeal lumpy" - Digital Underground, "The Humpty Dance"
- Preferred Communication Type/Method: I'm a big fan of nonverbal communication. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the silent type, but I feel like my non-verbals can convey emotions and information more vividly than words alone. It’s like adding sprinkles or bedazzling to words.
- Let's Talk About... Pop culture, celebrity gossip, and what's trending on social media - yes, please!
- Best Advice for COMM Students: My biggest regret from college is not taking advantage of study abroad programs due to the misconception that the application process was tedious and difficult. Don't live with this regret and study abroad already!
When is Advising?
Advising is now offered in-person and virtually!
- Remember that students who have completed 45-55 credits and seniors who have completed 86-100 credits have mandatory advising in both the College of Arts and Humanities and the communication department.
- Important Note: Students who are in their first semester at the University should schedule an appointment (they will need an academic plan, which is too involved for drop-ins).
In-Person Information:
- In-person drop-in advising is back for the fall, every Wednesday from 1-3PM. No appointment necessary! *There will be no drop-in advising on Wednesday, November 27th.
- Skinner Building, Room 2101E
- Duration: Each appointment will last 10 minutes or less.
- How to Sign In: Upon arrival, please scan the QR code located on the board outside the room and complete the Google Form provided.
- Students will be called in based on the order of sign-in, so be sure to arrive early!
Virtual Information:
We now have virtual drop-in advising that satisfies the COMM mandatory advising requirement!
- It's every Tuesday from 1-3PM via Zoom. Register on the Virtual Drop-In Form to receive the access link.
- Sign In: Please complete the Google Form, which will open at 1 PM to reserve your spot.
- Once you complete the form, you will receive a Zoom link to join the meeting.
- Duration: Each advising session is 10 minutes long – students will be assisted based on the order of entry.
