Feature on Elise Chang for "You've Got i-Mail!"
Our i-Mail series features internships COMM students have had and what they've learned from their experiences.
This spotlight showcases Elise Chang's Internship with Northrop Grumman for Summer 2025! Elise was a public relations intern for the Defense Systems sector within Northrop Grumman.
Elise found the internship opportunity on LinkedIn, and had been keeping Northrop Grumman on her radar for some time. She had already completed COMM 386, so this internship was a chance for her to experience a new angle of communication work, focusing mainly on strategy and corporate communications.
We had the chance to interview Elise about her internship, specifically how it relates to Communication.
How does the internship relate to COMM or how has communication helped you in this position?
I found myself applying concepts from the public relations courses, as well as media theory. I was able to refresh my AP Style writing, and appeal to different audiences.
What types of work do you do?
I worked mainly with the strategy team, as well as the media relations team this summer. I also supported their internal company magazine, and published two stories!
What have you learned and/or had the most fun doing?
I learned how a large corporation creates, applies, and integrates tangible strategies through its communications role(s). It’s hard for me to choose just one thing that I enjoyed doing this summer. I had so much fun supporting trade shows, media events, and creating evergreen social media content. Most importantly, I had a great time connecting with employees and learning through their stories and personal experiences.
Congrats on your internship and great work, Elise!
