Feature on Laila Ivey for "You've got i-mail!"
Our i-mail series will feature internships COMM students have had and what they've learned from their experiences.
This spotlight features Laila Ivey's internship with ArtFarm Studios!
How did you find out about the internship?
Ivey: "ArtFarm Studios, where I completed my first internship, is a local creative art space in the city of Annapolis in Maryland. I originally heard of ArtFarm Studios when I was a freshman in high school. I attended their Fearless Girls Photography camp where I first learned about photojournalism, which included an educational component and basic photo editing skills. The camp included visiting different art districts in Annapolis, and the amazing opportunity to go to City Hall and take portraits of city officials, including Mayor Gavin Buckley. This rewarding experience piqued my interest even more in photojournalism.
During my senior year of high school, I was interested in expanding my knowledge of photojournalism and decided to pursue an internship that centered around photography and graphic design. I reached out to Allison Harbaugh, who was my instructor during the photography camp and one of the co-owners of ArtFarm Studios. The timing was perfect as the studio was growing at a rapid pace and the need for an intern evolved! I was fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity to learn not only from Mrs. Harbaugh, but also from co-owner Darin Gilliam. They are the absolute best."
What did this internship teach you?
Ivey: "My time at ArtFarm Studios provided me with a solid foundation in photography rules and principles, particularly for shoots, events, and capturing people. This knowledge has been valuable in helping me successfully complete numerous assignments in digital and media-related projects."
What types of work did you do?
Ivey: "During my internship, I provided assistance with painting and production support. I also assisted with the setup and media coverage for the David Hayes Outdoor Museum event. Earlier in the year, I had the privilege of supporting the shooting of the HERA Music Festival, a female-focused event held in Washington, D.C. This was especially rewarding as I was part of the press!"
What did you have the most fun doing?
Ivey: "I gained valuable insights into the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into photojournalism. This internship was incredibly enriching, offering me a thorough view of the field, which I found fascinating. One of the most exciting projects I contributed to was the setup of art exhibits for the Black History Month Exhibit in Annapolis, MD. This detailed walkway exhibit allowed me the unique opportunity to shadow both studio owners. Not only did I learn a great deal, but I also thoroughly enjoyed the process!"
Congrats on your internship and thanks for sharing your work with us, Laila!
