Sylvie Carlos Headshot 2026; Brown suit with white background

Carlos won an All Disciplines Postgraduate Fulbright Award, which has brought her to UMD and the COMM Department

Sylvie Carlos, a PhD candidate from King’s College London, has received an All Disciplines Postgraduate Fulbright Award to enable her to research and lecture at the University of Maryland.

Sylvie Carlos is an award-winning creative producer, academic, and researcher, who has crafted impactful audio narratives for the BBC, Spotify, and CNN. Her doctoral research interrogates the systemic ways the British audio industry engages with Black audiences and creates (or fails to create) culturally-specific content. Her work focuses on amplifying underrepresented narratives and challenging the audio industry to do better!

Carlos is working on her dissertation and collaborating with scholars in the Department of Communication. In addition to presenting research and writing, Carlos is assisting Dr. Briana Barner with COMM449P: Special Topics in Digital Communication; Black Podcasts. Carlos is exploring how Black audio storytelling is approached, with a special interest in "how podcasting is being used to introduce the experiences of Black life globally to new audiences."

When interviewed about her time in the U.S., Carlos said she's "looking forward to connecting with researchers, audio-makers and building community—and of course, eating good food across the country! She hopes the experience will help her grow as a scholar and creative producer, and deepen transatlantic conversations around Black media and storytelling."

We are thrilled to have you on campus with us, Sylvie!
