An inspiring community partnership between the OCC and UMMC!
Affiliates from the Department of Communication's Oral Communication Center (OCC), Raphael Mazzone, Taylor Kleiner, and Daviana Fraser, recently partnered with the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) to lead a specialized communication workshop.
UMMC is the flagship academic medical center at the heart of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). The medical staff comprises nearly 1,200 attending physicians, who are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as well as 900 residents and fellows in all medical specialties.
The session was facilitated for Dr. David Marcozzi, Chief Clinical Officer/Senior Vice President at UMMC and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and his team.
The workshop focused on enhancing professional communication skills and was specifically designed to help clinical leaders deliver clearer, more impactful messages. Themes included best practices for content and delivery, tips for effectively formatting messages, and practical application activities aimed at shaping messages for your audience.
Dr. Marcozzi shared his excitement about the partnership, noting that the OCC team "did a great job in describing what right looks like," and providing actionable steps for the team to improve their messaging.
This initiative highlights a positive collaboration, showcasing how academic expertise in communication can directly support clinical leadership and institutional excellence.
The partnership between the OCC and UMMC exemplifies UMD's College of Arts and Humanities' Strategic Plan, and commitment to transformative thinking, expansive empathy, and meaningful futures. This common mission deepens our understandings of the world around us and our communities.
We are very proud of this successful partnership between UMD COMM and UMMC!
